Rock Records

Rock Records are a series of small-scale photo-collages and large-scale photo-installations which reflect on the past and present of the built landscape. They are loosely based on the common practice of attaching commemorative plaques to large boulders—often glacial erratics—overlapped with the way that geologists study the planet’s past by “reading” its rocks.

Each piece includes of a large-scale photograph adhered directly to the wall, showing odd boulders strewn along sidewalks, or construction debris that resembles them. To each large image I attach a small framed photograph of things so ordinary in the contemporary landscape that they are almost invisible, which functions like a plaque or a portal. When combining images and piecing these works together, I look for weird and poetic resonances between the built and natural landscape which might also have something to say about the peculiar ways we leave traces in spaces around us. These installations are hung low to the ground to approximate a sense of walking through the landscape and encountering these makeshift monuments. I think of them as memorials to the present, pivotal moment—the start of a new geologic epoch—assembled like a series of clues for imagined future geologists.
